Being a wall in Hammersmith is tough- quite literally. Especially when you’re surrounded by scampering, screechy little children. It really makes you have to take a step back and think, unfortunately I- being a wall can’t do that. Instead, with eyes plastered wide open: bleeding and bulbous and teary I am forced to witness atrocities.
SMACK BANG. A hot pink size seven reebok set free amidst the chaos of a year seven’s failed cartwheel lightly demolishes my surface. Great! There goes the brand new coating- thanks a lot Gemma from 7FT. Thanks!
Day after day, I babysit forgotten plates- nicely and patiently allowing all of the produce to ferment and marinate and effortlessly in the process invent an aromatic new scent of rotten tomatoes and something else gross that has reached the point of decomposition what you know it’s a vegetable but you can’t quite tell what it is.
Ooh! Vegetable bingo sounds fun. Too bad I can’t play- being a wall.
It wasn’t always like this, not when the teachers had those long wooden sticks, very sensible, exactly right. None of that ping pong ball abuse or graphic muck up day graffiti. No… instead there would be pearls : twinkling crystal spheres that turned into perfect streams that would trickle down the children’s cheeks. And then… then you would wait. It always started subtle; the calm before the storm.
A Quiver. A tremble of the lower lip perhaps, a strained glance down at sore red wrists which had a funny number line imprinted on them.
After the teacher scampered away with a bark and a grovel the thing began to wail.
Wail. Wail. Wail. Waa. Waa. Waa.
Then the thing began to shrivel up.
I couldn’t help but smile, well of course being a wall I can only try.
Its sparse little eyebrows would constrict together like the scrunches of a fabric with a sewing needle through it.
The mellow meowing would go on for a bit then get old fast.
Imagine silly little Gemma from 7FT then.
Of course- I can’t imagine… being a wall and all.
But at least I tricked some poor guy into reading something written by a wall.
